Our first stop was the Bauhaus - Dessau. It was interesting
to see a design school. The history of the building was just as interesting to
me as the architecture. One thing that did surprise me was how small the
building looked when the windows at the front were bricked up. It was
interesting to see how something so small made a difference on how the building
is perceived. It was also interesting how it was designed to make guest head
toward the auditorium. We ate lunch at the cafeteria behind the stage. We also got to see how designs from other
places were taken and put into the building. The head of the school had his
office in the bridge that connected the design school to a vocational school.
We also saw the dorms and they are bigger than the ones at tech and only have
one person per room. The dorms held only 28 people and 20 were for students the
others were for teachers. Many scandals came from this. The Masters houses were
next. They were for the more well known teachers. I only went into one but it
was interesting to see the different from the dorm room. After that, we drove
to our hotel and crashed for the night. Lauren and I went to find food and
found it at the café by the movie theater. They also had internet, which was
nice so we sat and eat there. After the soccer game, we went to sleep for the
night.
On the second day, we stared out looking at Nuremberg church
and how a short lecture on its history. It felt different then Berlin because
it was a medieval city. It was
interesting to see such a difference in atmosphere and lay of the two cities. We
could not go into most of the churches because it was Sunday so most were
having services and the one we did get into we had a short time in because they
were going to start service soon too. It was still cool to see the churches and
compare them to the ones we had already seen on the trip. Afterwards we went to
the Handwerkerhof. It is a historical tower, which is part of a castle. It was
a nice view of the city and you could see the defensive walls.
Then was the Documentation center and the Nazi Rally Grounds,
which was used by Hitler to promote his agenda. Most was destroyed or never
completed. The rally grounds location was chose for it historical meaning to
how rulers in the past. This is where he built a ground for troops to have fake
battles. Also, a long road that at one end points to the old city center and
this was done to show the connection the past of the city. It had square tiles
and this was done so that when the army marched they knew that it took two-steps
in each block. These blocks were rough to help prevent falling and so that
hopefully this would help the military look good and in doing so make the party
look good. These grounds were used for the propaganda of the party. The events
were used to promote the ones of the people who came to the events. We got to
see were the parades were held and where Hitler would stand in the stadium. It
was interesting to see what he had planned for the grounds and what was
completed. The Congress Hall was not completed and is still controversial
whether the design would have worked. The building was a call back to the coliseum
in Rome. It was interesting to see where the inspiration came from for the
buildings and for some it was from the past. The Museum was also interesting
because it showed how much mythology and a cult mentality surrounded Hitler.
Then we drove to Munich and looked around the old city
center. We saw Field Marshall Hall and FrauenKirche. It was difficult to get
around Marianplatz because there was an event going on in the platz. FrauenKirche this is where Hitler supporters
clashed with the police when he tried to take power by force. The church was
interesting because for the most part it was white. We had to leave because
they were starting service. We looked around a little but could not do much
because of the event in the platz.
Then it was off to the hotel for a good night’s sleep. I was
sick all day long so, I watch Germany win it game then I went off to sleep. Hopefully
tomorrow I will feel better and be able to enjoy the places we go more.
